Fat Freezing

Targeted fat reduction without surgery.

Some areas of the body can be remarkably resistant to diet and exercise. Even when you are active, maintain a healthy lifestyle and are close to your ideal weight, you may still have localised pockets of fat that affect your body shape and proportions. Fat Freezing, also known as cryolipolysis, is a non-surgical body contouring technology designed to target and reduce localised subcutaneous fat. It is not a treatment for obesity and should not be considered a substitute for weight management, nutrition or exercise. Individual results vary.

Treatment focus

  • What fat freezing is

Fat freezing uses controlled cooling to target fat cells beneath the skin. Fat cells are particularly sensitive to cold: during treatment the targeted area is cooled to a controlled temperature that triggers a natural process known as apoptosis, or programmed cell death, in susceptible fat cells. The body then gradually processes and clears the affected cells over the following weeks and months.

  • How it works

A controlled cooling applicator is applied to the selected area, targeting the subcutaneous fat layer while protecting the surrounding skin and tissues. Controlled cooling leads to adipocyte apoptosis, gradual clearance of the treated fat cells, and a reduction in the local fat layer. This process is gradual, which means results develop progressively rather than immediately.

  • What makes it different

One of the key advantages of cryolipolysis is that it targets fat cells rather than simply shrinking them temporarily. The treated adipocytes undergo apoptosis and are subsequently cleared by the body’s natural processes. Once eliminated, they do not simply return in the same way — however, the remaining fat cells can still enlarge with significant weight gain, which is why maintaining a stable weight and healthy lifestyle remains important.

  • How much fat can be reduced

Clinical results vary according to the technology used, treatment area, amount of pinchable fat, individual biology and treatment protocol. Research has demonstrated measurable reductions in local fat thickness and body circumference following cryolipolysis, while importantly showing that the treatment does not produce significant overall weight loss. This is why Fat Freezing is best suited to people looking for body contouring rather than weight loss.

  • Can it improve skin firmness?

Cryolipolysis may offer benefits beyond fat reduction. Clinical research has reported improvements in skin texture and laxity following treatment, including in areas such as the abdomen, arms, back and thighs. Further molecular and histological research has demonstrated increased expression of collagen-related markers, suggesting that dermal remodelling may contribute to the observed improvement in skin quality.

  • What about visceral fat?

There has been early research investigating whether cryolipolysis may influence abdominal visceral adipose tissue. One small split-body study involving 15 participants observed a reduction in visceral adipose tissue on the treated side 12 weeks after treatment. This is preliminary evidence and larger studies are needed, so at Sol Clinic Fat Freezing is positioned primarily as a treatment for localised subcutaneous fat and body contouring, rather than as a treatment for visceral obesity.

How your care works

  1. 01

    We assess the area first

We assess the amount and distribution of subcutaneous fat, skin quality and the overall shape of the treatment area before recommending a protocol. The suitability of each area depends on your anatomy and the amount of pinchable subcutaneous fat available for treatment.

  2. 02

    One session, or more

Not every patient requires the same number of treatments. For some, one carefully planned treatment may provide the desired improvement; for others, particularly where there is a larger volume of localised fat or multiple areas to treat, more than one session may be recommended. The number depends on the amount of localised fat, the treatment area, your anatomy, your desired outcome, the response to the first treatment and whether additional areas require treatment.

  3. 03

Part of a broader strategy, when appropriate

For some patients Fat Freezing may be sufficient. For others it may form part of a broader body-contouring and skin-tightening strategy, potentially combined with other technologies designed to address skin laxity, collagen stimulation or tissue quality. The objective is not simply to remove fat — it is to create a more balanced, refined and harmonious body contour.

Fat reduction is not weight loss

Fat Freezing is designed to reduce localised subcutaneous fat and refine body contours. It is not a weight-loss treatment. It is generally most appropriate for people who are relatively close to their desired body weight but have specific areas of localised, pinchable fat they would like to reduce.
